"In 1988 - after having spent the previous fourteen years exploring various aspects of woodworking - I was given a lathe. I began making very simple candle holders, weed pots and bowls, all of which helped me gain proficiency for what was to come. Five or so years into the work, I became aware of the "deep, hollow" vases that were being created by the masters of the profession. Being someone who's always intrigued by a challenge, I decided to give them a shot. Hollow turning quickly became the most difficult, frustrating and consequently satisfying work I've ever done. About mid 1996, I was looking for a way to differentiate my hollow vases from those being made by other turners. I brought myself back about twenty years to a type of piercing work I was doing at that time, and decided to incorporate the technique with the hollow forms and see what would happen. After a great deal of trial and error, I met with success. In my designs, I strive for a pleasing, organic look, though I've been told by many that any number of weird and wonderful things can be found."(click on any picture to see a larger image, use your back button to return here)
