Artist Statement

From military propaganda posters to religious iconography, I am fascinated with visual language. After years of telling stories with images on a television screen, I am compelled to communicate matters of the spirit through my own hand, in paint and pencil.

In the classical tradition, Art's greatest role is to nourish and inspire humanity. These are ideals I aspire to. I am influenced by Joseph Campbell's writings on comparative mythology and Jungian notions of a collective unconscious and archetypal imagery that resonates across humanity.

I am fortunate to have lived and traveled widely enough to know how to look beyond splendid cultural differences and find deep threads of commonality. This is the subject matter I am drawn to; life passages in all its vibrant forms. The human figure - an ageless device of Art - communicates these themes best.

Recently I have been searching for, and finding a paucity of wise old woman images. So I create the crone images for my mother, my daughters, and for myself, to project a sense of power, strength and beauty in the sage woman.
